24 Hours in A&E - Season 13

The RTS award-winning documentary series returns for a 13th run, following patients treated in the same 24-hour period at St George's in south west London. The hospital has one of the busiest A&E departments in Britain, which is under more pressure than ever. It's a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day. This episode features three young men from different walks of life. Shea, who's 17, is brought to St George's after a serious knife assault. With Shea's blood pressure becoming dangerously low, his mum Charmaine fears the worst. He's transferred to a high dependency unit as doctors worry that the knife has damaged his liver. Charmaine reflects on the terrible events of the day: 'I feel that actually there were two lives that day that were affected, I believe that he was as big a victim as Shea.' Bob's also 17. He's impaled his leg on a fence while taking a short cut home from his boy's school in London.

This episode of the RTS award-winning documentary series focuses on the changing nature of relationships between parents and children. Judith, who's 79, is airlifted to St George's after being involved in a road traffic collision. Consultant Will is concerned that she may have a pelvic fracture and life-threatening internal bleeding, and declares her condition 'code red'. As Judith is sent for an emergency CT scan, her daughter Penny discusses the tragic loss of her father to early onset dementia and how her biggest fear is the same thing happening to her mum. Meanwhile, 80-year-old Mohammad has come to A&E after falling at home during a family Eid celebratory feast. Mohammad is taken for a CT scan to assess his head injury.

Lewis, who's 18, has come off a motorbike and collided with two cars. He's taken immediately for a full body CT scan as doctors are concerned about the extent of the injuries to his pelvis, arm and head. Lewis's mum, Vanessa, explains how when Lewis was a youngster he always kept them on their toes, but as he got older she began to suspect there might be a reason for his behaviour. She was relieved when Lewis was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager and his close bond with his uncle helped him through his adolescent years. But when his uncle died, Lewis took it very badly.

This episode explores the value of freedom, and what happens when it's taken away. Michelle, who's 49, is rushed to St George's after having a collision with a car while riding her motorbike on a dual carriageway. Emergency care nurse Lee, who also has a passion for motorbikes, asks to be the nurse in charge of her care. Michelle grew up in South Africa during the Apartheid era, but when her marriage fell apart she made a leap of faith and moved to Britain. Gradually she started to find her feet and took up riding a motorbike, finding the feeling of freedom 'absolutely awesome'.

This episode of RTS award-winning 24 Hours in A&E explores notions of luck and chance, when a young man is involved in a high-speed car crash and an 18-year-old breaks his leg while playing football. David, who's 29, is airlifted to St George's following a head-on collision at speed. His girlfriend Emily drives for two hours to the hospital, with thoughts of serious internal injuries flashing through her mind. When she gets there she's shocked by what she finds. Darnell has severely broken his leg playing football. Doctors are concerned such a serious break could have long-term implications. Darnell's mum Natalie talks about how she was only 16 when she found out she was pregnant but was over the moon with the news.

This episode explores how grief can test the strongest marriages and how finding love for a second time can save you. Kim has been hit by a lorry. Patrick fell from a loft ladder.

Lee, who's 36, is rushed to St George's after being involved in a high-speed road traffic collision. As doctors examine Lee, his wife Emily reveals that Lee lost his best friend months earlier in a similar collision, saying 'It can't happen again, two best friends can't go in the same way.' Lee's CT scans reveal a potentially life-threatening injury to his spleen. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Jeroen has been knocked off his bike on the way to work. The accident was caught on his own GoPro camera mounted on his helmet. As Jeroen is taken for emergency CT scans, his wife Joanna reflects on how they both wanted children together and underwent IVF.

Joan, who's 80, has severe pain in her chest, arm and jaw. Consultant Sarah is concerned that Joan's heart is struggling and requests an urgent blood test and heart trace. Joan's daughters Sarah and Sue talk about how their parents were only 16 when they first met at a local dance, how they were together ever since, how they would hold hands in bed every night, and how Joan lost her husband - and they lost their father - just six months ago. Roofer Mark, who's 54, has fallen 10 feet off a ladder. Doctors are concerned that the impact may have broken bones in his pelvis and spine. Mark's wife Sarah talks about the 11-year age gap in their relationship, and how she proposed to him and they were engaged on her 18th birthday.

This episode explores the importance of family. Mike, who's 79, has collapsed in the street. Chartered surveyor Andrew has tripped on a paving slab and has a suspected dislocated shoulder.
