This is the beginning, of the Apocalypse, the beginnings of the conflict known as "The War to End All Wars," including the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914.

Russia and Germany clash in the Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914; France defeats the German army in the Battle of the Marne; colonial troops join the global conflict.
The war was to be short and glorious. But fear spreads. While the generals refuse to change their tactics, men are being killed on an unprecedented scale. An entire generation could be lost and yet the war goes on.

Enfer
War descends into hell. The battlefield becomes a slaughterhouse. After 16 months of fighting, five million men are dead. Despite this, neither side has gained any ground until a new and terrifying machine rolls onto the battlefield… the Tank.
