Red spider lilies announce the arrival of fall in Ohara, Kyoto. Venetia makes herb tea with fennel seeds, said to reduce eyestrain, and uses figs from her backyard in her original recipe. With a friend, she repairs an Andon paper lamp in an old-fashioned way, using Kurotani washi paper made in Ayabe, Kyoto. She then visits a maker of the Nishijin-ori textile, who has kept the hand-weaving tradition alive to this day. At the very end, we see that her grandson, Joe, is now a high-school student.

For Ellis, that means hard-boiled shoe leather police work; for Max, it means accents, schemes and generally befriending everyone in sight, while driving Ellis absolutely nuts. Against the backdrop of beautiful Vancouver — with all its unique, charming, and even contradictory neighbourhoods and subcultures — the two will have to learn what it means to trust another person and maybe actually become partners.

The series deals with a variety of controversial topics, including abortion, gun control, physical disabilities, racism, sexism, religion, the Israeli/Palestinian situation, terrorism, transsexuality, slavery, incest, sexual harassment in education, the homeless, statutory rape, drug addiction, pedophilia, child abuse, mental illness, gay rights and dumpster babies.
