Vanya develops rough preparation for a meeting of the grandmother which the other day has to arrive on a visit. He writes down village sounds (low of cows, a cackle of hens etc.) on the cartridge, on the last money buys an old rocking-chair, generally does everything possible that the grandmother felt as houses. But literally a day before its arrival, Arkady using Ivan's trustfulness, beats it in "thimbles". Not in forces in time to stop, Ivan, among other things, loses also a grandmother's chair. The meeting of the grandmother takes place heat and is gentle, but Andrey incidentally blabs out about the lost chair. Next day the grandmother Manana goes to shop, offers Arkady party in a backgammon and puts it on a bankruptcy side.
