Ramón scolds Manuel, he knows that he has not slept with his new wife and reminds him of his obligations or else his son will suffer. At the harvest, tension grows between the day laborers, Claudia turns her vindictive anger against the landowner's new wife whom she intimidates by reminding her that her husband may be a murderer. María approaches the tavern where she meets Pepita, the owner's wife, and tells her about the rumors about what happened to Llanos, Manuel's first wife. María finds a letter that Llanos wrote to her lover. She confesses that she is pregnant and that they must plan for her escape. Nicolás, Manuel's son, suffers an attack, when he wakes up, he confesses that the last time he saw her mother was when her father took her to the forest.
