Following the death of her best friend, Lisa, Jane must help care for her family and close down her practice. This is where Jane first meets Alison Blunt, a gifted violinist with a dangerously disturbed personality. When Jane and her friends' family are threatened she must think her way into Alison's mind, leaving a bitter aftertaste.

However, when a man claiming to be his secret lover is found brutally murdered, forensic psychiatrist Jane Halifax begins her own investigation. Analysing Simon's behaviour, Jane realises he may be capable of murder. The potentially lethal question remains how...Jane realises that a lot rests upon her conclusions, including her own safety.
