Johnny Kingdom's Wild Exmoor - Season 1
Season 1
Episodes
Spring
We begin in spring as he sets off across the moor in search of a herd of male red deer. This is when they begin to lose their antlers and Johnny wants to show us what they look like. Then he's off to meet Bob Sampson, an old friend who has had a brilliant idea about how to construct an underground badger house. Johnny and Bob set about converting an unused septic tank and bury it complete with remote cameras on Johnny's land on the edge of Exmoor. He's hoping that for the first time, he will be able to film badgers underground.
Summer
It's summer the time of year when red deer calves are born and Johnny is determined to film some. But they're difficult to see because to keep them safe, they're born in very long grass. Eventually he finds one but only its ears are visible so Johnny decides to return in a few days hoping for a better view.
Autumn
It's now autumn and Johnny Kingdom's favourite time of year - the rut, the red deer's mating season. He's determined to capture as much of the action as he can and begins by filming a magnificent stag with a herd of females on his friend Colin's farm.
Winter
Winter has arrived, the time of year when the salmon return home from the Atlantic Ocean to lay their eggs in the rivers where they were born. Johnny has been scouring Exmoor looking for them and finally in the tiny village of Brayford, Johnny gets his shots of a large male salmon.
It's also the time of year for the South Molton Fatstock Market, which attracts sheep farmers from all over southwest England keen to demonstrate the quality of their animals. But Johnny's favourites are the Shire horses and he helps out as one of these huge beasts is fitted with new shoes.
