Местный главарь мелкой банды Чуха постепенно втягивает молодого боксера Ветрилова в свои дела, обещая красивую блатную жизнь. В знак дружбы Ветрилов дарит ему свой значок спортивного общества "Динамо".
Фартовый заселяется в квартиру к по-прежнему влюбленной в него администраторше гостиницы Марине. Он просит Гонту сделать ему качественные фальшивые документы. Бандиты Чалого - Якут и Рашпиль - узнают о появлении Фартового в городе и решают расквитаться с ним за прошлые обиды - ведь Фартовый не уважает воров и так и не отдал в общак долю от выигрыша у партийных чинуш. Однако Чалый выступает против такой расправы, предупреждая их о влиятельности и опасности Фартового. Шумилова привозит Сережу к отцу Дмитрию. К ее удивлению, поставив чудотворную икону у изголовья мальчика, священник проводит сеанс мануальной терапии, после чего Сережа засыпает. Шумилова на время оставляет сына. Тем временем банда Чухи (без Ветрилова) совершает налет на склад продукции Горторга. В схватке Чуха убивает старика-сторожа. Прибыв в Петрово, Баженин сообщает Козыреву подробности миссии Фартового - тот должен похитить очень дорогую икону, хранящуюся у отца Дмитрия. Им нельзя его упускать. Проснувшись, Сережа становится свидетелем ограбления, совершенного Фартовым.
