The eight-part series is once again set in contemporary London and the new series unfolds in the unique style of Rosenfeldt's Nordic style. Interweaving storylines and characters from all different walks of life and backgrounds will lead the audiences on a complex and emotional journey and keep them guessing until the very end.The story begins with the discovery of a body inside a wall. The body is surrounded by toys and soft animals and a school blazer; a devastated Marcella soon works out that the body is that of schoolboy Leo Priestley, who was abducted a few years beforehand and a friend of Marcella's son, Edward.A task-force is quickly pulled together by newly promoted DCI, Tim and we are introduced to a new member of the team, LeAnn. In one of the first meetings, she stands up for Marcella – something that she is not used to within the workplace.As the investigation progresses, we're introduced to a number of new characters – an old pop star Reg and his manager and friend Alan; edgy businessman Vince Whitman and his charity boss wife Maya; a previously convicted criminal Phil Dawkins; brother and sister Gail and Eric; and Becky, the new fiancée of Marcella's ex-husband.Whilst the storylines entwine, Marcella is still battling with her ongoing sporadic fugue states which she struggles to come to terms with and is getting increasingly worried about the effects it is having on her and her family around her.

Episode 1
Five months after the events of the last series, DS Marcella Backland is called to a house where a workman has drilled through a wall and discovered an ear. When the wall is taken down, Marcella is horrified to discover that the ear belonged to Leo Priestley, a 7-year old boy who's been missing for four years and who knew her son. Leo was meant to walk home with Edward, Marcella's son on the day he went missing.
Leo's discovery puts Marcella in confrontation with a previously convicted child abuser, Phil Dawkins. Dawkins is open to Marcella about being a non-practising paedophile – his urges are deemed unacceptable by society and he takes precautions to control them. Following his release from prison he's tried to move on to an acceptable life but Marcella struggles to move past Phil's admission.
Episode 2
Marcella decides to return to the root cause of her blackouts. Meanwhile, the discovery of another body leads the team to question what type of killer they're dealing with.
Episode 3
Marcella digs deep in her attempts to take down Phil Dawkins, but her dogged pursuit has tragic consequences, causing her to question everything. Meanwhile, her ongoing blackouts mean she has to face up to the threat of losing her children.
Episode 4
Adam gets away from the killer's prison but loses consciousness while trying to escape in the car of an elderly couple. Meanwhile, Marcella confronts Reg about a binder that was stolen from his house, while Phil sets his sights on the detective.
Episode 5
Kevin Hoffs and his blue lorry are found abandoned in a lay by. Leann informs Marcella that the lorry had been there for 36 hours.
After analysing Adam's phone records, the team become aware that Adam had contacted the KidsCall helpline. Marcella heads there to retrieve the records and Maya is helpful despite both women having Tim Williamson in common. From Adam's records they see that he'd admitted to being abused by his father but his father has alibis for many incidents surrounding the case.
Episode 6
The arrest of Vince Whitman causes massive fallout between Tim and Marcella. Meanwhile, Postfeed24's internet viral video leads the team to discover another body much closer to home.
Episode 7
Marcella heads to Nigel Stafford's house to question him. As she walks around the house she finds a small grave before heading inside the unlocked door. Inside she's confronted by Nigel, holding a knife.
Episode 8
Marcella has no time to lose as the killer has Edward. Following leads she races to the killer's house, but finds it empty except for a ringing phone. However, a premonition offers up clues, but can she get to her child before it is too late?
