Episode 1
It's 1963, and Alison Wilson returns home to husband Alexander - shortly before his sudden death. Blinded by grief and focusing on comforting her two teenage sons (Gordon and Nigel), Alison is bewildered when a Gladys Wilson arrives at the door, claiming to be Alec's ‘real' wife. Alison sets out on a journey to discover who Alexander Wilson really was, dissecting their 1940s romance and her husband's mysterious career in the secret service.

Episode 2
Alison is on the tail of the elusive Dorothy - finding photographs of her from Alec's stint in India. After speaking to Alec's handler Coleman and hearing that their ‘relationship' was likely a cover story, Alison traces Dorothy to Yorkshire and demands to hear the truth. Back in the 1940s Alison struggles with the aftermath of Alec's decisions, forced to raise her poverty-stricken young family in wartime London.

Episode 3
More desperate than ever to find out the truth, Alison delves further into her shared past with Alec, remembering both the good times and the terrible - and trying to uncover the true depth of her husband's lies. Hearing wildly differing theories from different angles, one painting Alec as a wronged hero, the other as a cruel fantasist, an overwrought Alison is no longer sure who to believe. A final shock revelation inspires a profound and drastic new beginning for her.
