Following an explosion at the school site that an architect designed, he is accused of setting the blast and then ultimately killing the jobsite manager when the manager was accused of unsafe and shoddy work on the job. The architect's mother is frantic to get the cops to uncover bribery in the city manager office and to find who really caused all the commotion at the job site, so she tries to convince Jessica that her son is the fruit of an affair she had with Frank while serving together during the Korean War.

However, when her publisher's liaison's car breaks down on the outskirts of the Amish area, she learns that he comes from the area and is "shunned" from the local Amish community. When one of the church leaders is discovered murdered in his barn, Reuben is the prime suspect when it comes out that he and the victim had a volatile past. To prove that he is innocent, Jessica has her work cut out to prove someone from the normally non-violent Amish community may have wanted the overly-strict man out of their lives permanently.
