Season 1
Set during the period of the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution against the Japanese, the drama tells the story of two half-brothers, one illegitimate and low born, and one, part of the pro-Japanese ruling elite, who find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

Episode 1
Yi Kang warns Bong Joon not to follow Dong Hak. Bong Joon gets caught by the government office and receives severe punishment. Yi Hyun comes back from studying abroad in Japan. Ja In tries to obtain rice amidst the export restrictions to continue her trade with Japanese merchants.
Episode 2
Yi Kang loses a fight with Duk Ki. Ja In goes to Bong Joon to buy some medicine. The new district magistrate of Gobu lifts the banggongnyeong, and Baek Ga gets anxious because he can't make any money. Therefore, he orders Yi Kang to kill the district magistrate.
Episode 3
Bong Joon incites rebellion to punish the corrupt officials. Baek Ga runs away to avoid the rioters but he gets an attack. Yi Kang goes to Ja In and asks her for help. Yi Hyun hears what happened in Gobu and he hesitates whether to go back to Gobu or not. Meanwhile, Suk Joo tries to stop Bong Joon from attacking Jeonju Castle.
Episode 4
Yoo Wol begs Bong Joon to save Yi Kang's life. Yi Hyun comes back to Gobu to find Baek Ga. A new district magistrate comes to Gobu. Si Hyung comes to Bong Joon and tells him to give up the revolt. Ja In gets caught by the officials. Meanwhile, Baek Ga comes back to Gobu
Episode 5
Baek Ga threatens Ja In because she didn't inform the government office about the riot. The riot investigator tries to find Jun Bong Joon's whereabouts. Baek Ga suggests to Seok Ju to let Myung Shim marry Yi Hyun. Baek Ga tells Yi Kang to take over his position from now on.
Episode 6
Yi Kang and Yoo Wol have dinner with Baek's family. Yi Hyun tells Yi Kang to be different from Baek Ga. Ms. Chae prepares to greet Myung Shim as her daughter-in-law, and Donghak followers burn down the Baek's rice store.
Episode 7
Yi Kang tells Baek Ga that he doesn't want to take over Baek Ga's position. Yi Kang plans to leave Gobu with Yoo Wol. Baek Ga puts the blame on Yoo Wol to make Yi Kang take over his position. Yi Hyun gets to know Baek Ga's plan, and he runs away with Yoo Wol.
Episode 8
Bong Joon asks Yi Hyun to join the Donghak followers, but Yi Hyun refuses. Ja In discovers an unconscious Yi Kang. Yi Hyun goes back to his home and tells his family that he killed Yoo Wol. Yi Kang and Yoo Wol finally meet, and they go to Ja In's hostel.
Episode 9
Because of Suk Joo, Yi Hyun gets enlisted to the conscripted army. Yi Kang goes to Bong Joon to join the loyal army, but there are so many people who are resentful of Yi Kang. Ja In voluntarily becomes an army supplier and heads for Mount Baek, and she gets to meet Yi Hyun there.
Episode 10
Bong Joon goes to see Suk Joo, but Suk Joo acts distant and cold towards Bong Joon. Baek Ga asks Yi Kang to bring Yi Hyun back and suggests to Yi Kang to live as they used to. However, Yi Kang refuses to go back to the old days. Meanwhile, Bong Joon accepts Yi Kang as a Donghak member.
Episode 11
The Donghak army trains to fight against the government army. Yi Kang tries to practice shooting a gun, but it is not easy for him. Baek Ga asks Ja In if she happened to see Yi Hyun or Yi Kang. Ja In gets to meet Yi Hyun, and she gives him Myung Shim's gift.
Episode 12
When the provincial army enters Hwangto-hyun, they are ambushed by the Donghak army. After the ambush, Yi Hyun confronts Hong Ga about the gyosaengan and learns that it was Lord Hwang who had him conscripted. Later in the night, the Donghak army ambushes the provincial army one more time.
Episode 13
The Donghak army defeats the provincial army. Ja In gets caught by Donghak followers, and Kyung Soon orders to kill her if she happens to do anything silly. Yi Hyun goes to meet Suk Joo and tells him that he will prepare for the marriage. However, Suk Joo tells him to postpone the marriage until the revolt is quelled.
Episode 14
Yi Kang leaves the Donghak army after hearing that it was Lord Hwang who had Yi Hyun enlisted and is now missing. And when Ja In gets released, she heads straight for Gobu knowing that Yi Kang would be there. Meanwhile, Yi Hyun prepares for his wedding day and visits Seok Ju.
Episode 15
Master Choi gets to meet his former subordinate Kyu Tae. Kyung Soon bursts out in anger at Yi Kang and tells him that he is no longer a member of the detached force. Bong Joon prepares to fight against the Joseon army's machine guns. Yi Kang tells Bong Joon that he wants to kill Suk Joo after he wins the war.
Episode 16
Ja In feels guilty thinking that she takes privilege from the weak people. Baek Ga tells Yi Hyun to run away so that he won't be conscripted again, but Yi Hyun tells Baek Ga that he will become an official. Suk Joo tells Myung Shim to get over Yi Hyun. Meanwhile, the King sends a message to console the Donghak army.
Episode 17
Suk Joo and Yi Hyun join the Joseon army. Myung Shim asks Yi Hyun to forgive Suk Joo, but Yi Hyun tells her he won't. Kyung Sun announces to the peddlers to disperse Jeolla Province's Peddlers' Inn. The Joseon army suddenly attacks the Donghak army, and Yi Hyun plays an active part in the battlefield.
Episode 18
For being a marksman with a merciless rifle, Yi Hyun is ordered to kill General Nokdu on sight. And when the battle rages on Mount Wan, he takes aim and fires, severely injuring General Nokdu. Yi Kang takes him out of harm's way, and later gets appointed as the new boss. Meanwhile, a reward notice for the death of Jun Bong Joon is put up for the Donghak members to see.
Episode 19
Bun Gae gets severely injured after fighting Yi Hyun and loses his life. Yi Hyun takes charge of the local soldiers instead of Suk Joo. The Qing army comes to Joseon to help the Joseon army. Meanwhile, Yi Kang grows suspicious of Yi Hyun being the marksman in the Joseon army.
Episode 20
Ja In thinks she has a possible solution, and as she presents it to her father, she asks him to spare Yi Kang's life. Worried of the Qing army's presence, Yi Hyun entreats his commanding officer to read the Treaty of Tianjin. Meanwhile, the Japanese army lands in Jemulpo.
Episode 21
Ja In warns Yi Kang if he harms her father in any ways, she will not forgive Yi Kang. Gye Hoon orders the Joseon army to prepare for attacking the Donghak army at dawn, but Hak Jin stops him. Meanwhile, Ja In comes to see Bong Joon to make a deal. Meanwhile, the Japanese army arrives in Joseon.
Episode 22
Baek Ga goes to Suk Joo and tells him to wait for Yi Hyun's return, but Suk Joo refuses. Hak Jin accepts the peace treaty. However, Bong Joon hesitates to sign the treaty because Gae Nam adamantly opposes. After his consideration, Bong Joon decides to sign the treaty. Meanwhile, Gye Hoon tells Yi Hyun to kill Bong Joon.
Episode 23
Gye Hoon incites Yi Hyun to assassinate Bong Joon before the signing of the peace treaty. Gye Hoon promises to send Yi Hyun to Hanyang instead of Gobu. As Hak Jin and Bong Joon both agrees to sign the peace treaty, they meet in front of Jeonju Castle. While Hak Jin and Bong Joon are discussing the details, Yi Hyun takes aim.
Episode 24
Ja In's father says that he will go to Hanyang to meet Minister Min Hyun Joon, but Ja In stops him. Yoo Wol packs her stuff to leave for Gobu. Yi Kang confesses his love to Ja In. Yi Hyun comes to Bong Joon and tells him that he wants to help Bong Joon with the reform bill.
Episode 25
Yi Kang heads to Hanyang to spy on the Japanese army. Dong Rok Dog leaves the Donghak army because he is worried about his family. On his way home, he gets to meet Kim Ga. Bong Jun visits Baek Ga, and Baek Ga tells him that he will help Yi Hyun with all his heart. Meanwhile, the Japanese come to see Bong Joon.
Episode 26
Ja In decides to go to Hanyang to find Yi Kang, so she goes to her father to get his consent. Yi Hyun tells the aristocrats to eliminate their slave documents. Bong Joon comes to see Suk Joo, but Suk Joo refuses to see him. Myung Shim tells Yi Hyun that she will wait for him. Meanwhile, Yi Kang finally meets Park Dong Jin.
Episode 27
Lord Dae Won visits the King to deliver Bong Joon's letter to him. After reading it, the King thinks that he should listen to Bong Joon's opinion, but the Queen tries to stop him. Meanwhile, the Japanese diplomat comes to see the King. Myung Shim tells Suk Joo that she will not listen to him anymore.
Episode 28
Monk Hae tells Beo Dul to tell Yi Kang that she has feelings for him, but Beo Dul refuses. Ja In meets Takeda and she is suspicious of him. Yi Kang gets to meet Ja In in Hanyang. Meanwhile, Japan prepares to start a war in Joseon, and Lord Daewon tells Yi Kang to bring Bong Joon to Hanyang.
Episode 29
Kim Ga tells Yi Hyun that he will reveal the truth that Yi Hyun is the ogre. Kim Ga promises that he won't reveal it if Yi Hyun brings him a certain amount of money. Yi Hyun denies that he is the ogre, but Kim Ga doesn't step back. Meanwhile, the King surrenders to Japan, and the Japanese army dominates Joseon.
Episode 30
Bong Joon gets to know that the Japanese army invaded the palace. Ja In is called before the Queen. The Queen wants Ja In to be the business partner with Takeda to spy on Japan's movement. Ja In visits Takeda and tells him that she wants to accept the deal that he suggested previously.
Episode 31
Yi Kang receives the King's order to take Secretary Lee to Bong Joon, but he wants to rescue Beo Dul before he serves the order. Takeda suggests to Yi Hyun that he should work with him. Yi Kang and Monk Hae get caught in a trap while trying to rescue Beo Dul, and Duk Ki saves them.
Episode 32
Yi Hyun decides to join hands with Takeda. Kim Ga tells Bong Joon that the ogre is Yi Hyun. Baek family starts to make straw shoes for a living. Yi Kang comes back to Jeonju with Secretary Lee. Secretary Lee delivers the King's message to Bong Joon. Meanwhile, Bong Joon asks Yi Kang about the ogre.
Episode 33
Yi Kang is expelled from the Donghak army because he hid the fact that Yi Hyun is the ogre. Yi Kang tells Bong Joon that he wants to serve in a war as a common soldier at least, but Bong Joon says that he won't raise an army. Meanwhile, Ja In tells the Queen that she has to let the King know how grave the situation is.
Episode 34
Bong Joon is actually planning to raise an army. Doo Hwang visits Takeda to bribe him, and he is surprised to see Yi Hyun there. Yoo Wol gets attacked by a masked gang, and Yi Kang saves her. Yi Kang warns Suk Joo to get along with the Jipgangso. Meanwhile, Ja In visits Bong Joon to offer him help.
Episode 35
Duk Ki tells Ja In that he wants to stop selling rice to the Japanese because he thinks it is an act of betraying the country, and Ja In tells him her real plan. Doo Hwang brings Secretary Lee to Yi Hyun, and Yi Hyun interrogates him. Meanwhile, Baek Ga tells Yi Kang to leave Gobu with Yoo Wol.
Episode 36
Yoo Wol tells Yi Kang to go back to Bong Joon and serve him. Yi Hyun gets to encounter Hong Ga and tells him to be his subordinate. Meanwhile, Yi Kang tells Bong Joon that he wants to work for Bong Joon again. And Bong Joon tells Yi Kang to help Ja In to prepare for war.
Episode 37
Yi Kang gets to meet Yi Hyun at the Jeonju Hostel, and Yi Kang pretends that he wants to be a peddler after being kicked out of the Donghak army. Yi Hyun visits Bong Joon to check if he is going to raise an army or not. Meanwhile, Yoo Wol helps the Baek family to sell their straw shoes.
Episode 38
Yi Hyun comes to the Jeonju Hostel to hide, and Duk Ki locks him in the barn. Yi Hyun gets to discover a pile of straw shoes in the barn and notices that Ja In is on Bong Joon's side. Yi Kang gets reinstated as the boss of the detached force. Meanwhile, Suk Joo decides to raise an army to fight against the Japanese.
Episode 39
Yi Hyun tells Bong Gil to send the war supplies to the original recipient in order to save Ja In's life. A lot of people in Gobu participate in raising an army, and even Myung Shim comes to the Jipgangso to help them. Inoue requests for the King to send the instruction letter to disperse the loyal soldiers in Samnye.
Episode 40
Bong Gil tells Duk Ki that he should stop his plan if he wants to save Ja In's life. Suk Joo tells Bong Joon that he wants to participate in the loyal army to help them defeat the Japanese army. Bong Joon waits for Ja In, but she doesn't show up. Meanwhile, Duk Ki comes to Bong Joon and reveals what happened to Ja In.
Episode 41
Ja In asks Yi Hyun to bring her to the punitive force base with him. Duk Ki gets released, but he wants to stay so that he can fight with the loyal army. The Japanese army attacks the loyal army brutally. Kyu Tae suggests to Takeda that he should convince the loyal army to surrender, but Takeda has no intention of listening to him.
Episode 42
The loyal army suffers a crushing defeat in the battle, and they consider whether to disperse or not. Bong Joon asks Yi Kang what to do, and Yi Kang suggests to him that he should listen to the loyal soldiers' opinions. Meanwhile, Ja In looks for Yi Kang everywhere at the battlefield, and she encounters Duk Ki.
Episode 43
Everyone leaves Gobu's Jipgangso to run away from the people's army, but Yoo Wol insists on staying there. A couple of men suddenly came and take Yoo Wol with them. Yi Hyun comes to Gobu to relay the order from the Military Administration. Myung Shim gets to see Yi Hyun at that moment, and she asks him if he really is working for Japan.
Episode 44
Kim Ga offers shelter to Bong Joon and Kyung Syn. The government announces to the public that there will be a reward for reporting Bong Joon's whereabouts, and Kim Ga happens to hear that. Meanwhile, Yi Kang comes to Ja In to ask for money, and Ja In lets Yi Kang meet Yoo Wol.
Episode 45
Myung Shim cries in despair after seeing Suk Joo's dead body. She asks Eok Seo how Suk Joo died, and Eok Seo tells her that Yi Hyun is the one who killed Suk Joo. In return for sparing Bong Joon's life, Yi Hyun suggests to him that he should confess who ordered him to raise an army.
Episode 46
Kim Ga asks for forgiveness, but Beo Dul punishes him. Yi Hyun is appointed as the new district magistrate of Gobu. Yi Hyun gets to know that Takeda is planning to take over Joseon as Japanese territory. Meanwhile, Baek Ga goes to Myung Shim and tells her to leave Gobu.
Episode 47
Ja In visits Yoo Wol in Uiju and asks her to be a middle person who delivers necessary goods to the loyal army. Beo Dul keeps losing her consciousness, and Monk Hae thinks it is time to say goodbye to her. Beo Dul also knows about her condition, and she wants to perform her duty before she dies.
Episode 48
Baek Ga tells Yi Kang to take his own life for Yi Hyun's sake. Yi Hyun wants Myung Shim to understand his difficulties, but Myung Shim tells him that the Yi Hyun that she loved doesn't exist any longer. The day before Yi Kang's execution, Yi Hyun comes to Yi Kang to say goodbye.
