Andrew Manson , a newly qualified doctor, arrives in the Welsh mining town of Drmeffy, full of enthusiasm to start his career as an assistant to Dr Page. His expectations are soon shattered.

Miss Page won't accept that the increase in Dr Page's patients has anything to do with Andrew.

When Joe Morgan gives Andrew a personal gift of five guineas-Andrew is unprepared for the chain of events that this gesture brings about.
