A family buys an old carpet from a junkshop, which when unrolled reveals a large shiny egg. Bob accidently knocks the egg into the fire and their magical adventures begin.

The children find themselves transported back from France to London, and from there to a faraway tropical desert island.

The children arrive back in London leaving Cook as queen of the island. Their next adventure takes them even further afield.
The Temple of the Phoenix
The children return to the church bazaar in the nick of time. A great surprise is in store when they take the Phoenix on a tour of the City of London.
Gifts from Persia
The children send the carpet away to its native land to bring back some gifts but are unimpressed with what arrives.
What to Do with a Burglar
The four-legged, furry gifts the carpet has brought back require the children's attention, while an unwelcome visitor is taken to a desert island.
The Hole in the Carpet
The children return from the island where they have left the burglar, but Robert and Jane arrive in a strange house where they become suspects.
A Night at the Theatre
Anthea and Cyril arrive on the carpet in the nick of time to help Robert and Jane. The phoenix joins the family on a visit to the theatre with unexpected results.
