The Rebel - Season 2

Season 2
Simon Callow is back as irascible, hell-raising pensioner Henry Palmer, the former mod who sees no reason to stop living his life by his own rules now he's in his 70s, in the second, brand-new series of this UKTV Original.
Written by Andrew Birch, adapted from his own cartoon strip for The Oldie, The Rebel sees Harry once again sticking two fingers up at authority, society and the vagaries of modern life. He's still of the firm belief there's no problem that can't be solved by a great tune and a quick bit of vandalism.
Also returning in this new, six-part series are Bill Paterson as former hippie Charles, Anita Dobson as charity shop worker Margaret, Anna Crilly as Henry's put-upon daughter Cath, and Frances Barber.

Episodes

Money
In the first episode, Henry attempts to help out Cath who is, like many young couples, struggling with astronomical rent rates (Made harder by her husband, Jeremy, enjoying a sabbatical teaching in Lesotho). Yet, when the Bank is far from helpful and the Letting Agent is unwilling to cut them some slack, Henry is forced to face the prospect of selling his house and downsizing to a retirement home. If that's the case, he isn't going to go quietly, so it falls to Margaret and Charles to come up with a rescue package.

Death
In this episode, Amaya offers to drive her, Henry, Margaret and Charles to a friend's funeral. However, her best intentions are quickly ruined when Henry insists on making the journey on his Lambretta. While Charles sees the journey as an opportunity to get closer to Margaret, Cath's anxiety for Henry's safety reaches fever pitch when his beloved Scooter ends up in a hedge, and he is forced to take public transport. With Henry due to give the eulogy being late is not an option, but in fact it's touch and go if he'll even make it at all.

Health
In this episode, an unwelcome surprise birthday party for Henry inspires him to go out on the ‘lash' to prove that he's still as fit as he was in his youth. But a misjudged late-night dip in the sea seemingly leaves both him and Charles very much worse for wear. As their symptoms deteriorate, they ultimately end up in hospital, with Henry finding the modern day ‘customer'-orientated NHS too much to bear. Meanwhile, Charles' efforts to distract Margaret from the romantic advances of the suave Dr. Cranmore land him in an isolation ward, and it transpires Cath's new fascination with all things medieval could have a lot to answer for.

Drugs
When Charles' ex-wife is arrested in a drugs bust, Henry and Charles embark on a novel scheme to raise money for her defence lawyer. The ever vigilant (and vindictive) PC Burns quickly smells something funny, and goes undercover in an attempt to catch them in an illegal act. When the scheme starts to rapidly unravel, it's Margaret (intentionally) and Cath, along with her new lodger, Amaya (very unintentionally) who save the day.

Sex
A regular Northern Soul night at a local club is providing Henry with the perfect opportunity to let his hair down – and in true Brighton style that means ‘anything goes'. But by persuading Margaret and Charles to join him, it looks like the fun will be short-lived when he lands the former with an unwanted admirer, and the latter in a dangerous liaison with an ex. When a suspicious Charles then overhears a conversation between Henry and Margaret suggesting they are now an item, it looks like their friendship could be finished. Things go from bad to worse when Cath, determined to show she knows how to have fun, railroads Amaya into hosting a house party, which quickly gets out of control, ruins Jeremy's big surprise and finds Henry in a compromising position with the police.

Love
Henry is doing his best to support Cath as she comes to terms with the fact Jeremy is staying in Lesotho for good. Their dwindling family is hit further by a burglary at Henry's house, which includes the theft of the Urn with Henry's late wife in.
An even more erratic than usual Henry and Cath take it upon themselves to reclaim the ashes and embark on a journey into Brighton's 'petty' criminal underworld. This leaves Margaret facing a life-changing dilemma alone - does she take Charles up on his offer to move to Scotland with him? It seems everyone is being forced to make decisions about love that they've been avoiding for far too long...
