Hoe slim je bent, lijkt een vaststaand gegeven. Je wordt geboren met een bepaalde intelligentie en daar lijkt weinig aan te doen. Toch zijn er heel wat handleidingen op de markt die het tegendeel beweren. Tom wil weten of hij effectief z'n IQ kan verbeteren. Hij begint met een eerste IQ-test. De score die hij daarop haalt, zal hij op acht maanden tijd proberen omhoog te krijgen tot 131. Daarmee ben je officieel hoogbegaafd en mag je toetreden tot Mensa, een exclusieve club van de twee procent slimste mensen ter wereld. Toms zoektocht naar meer intelligentie brengt hem bij Dominic O’Brien. O’Brien is achtvoudig wereldkampioen Memory en kent het getal pi tot duizend getallen na de komma uit het hoofd. Hij probeert Tom op een half uur tijd het getal pi tot honderd getallen na de komma uit het hoofd te leren. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat Tom daardoor ook effectief slimmer zal worden. Na acht maanden braintraining doet Tom een tweede test. Zijn score is 128, wat een hoog cijfer is. Maar het is spijtig genoeg drie punten te weinig om hoogbegaafd te zijn. Het hart is hij er niet van in, want z'n hoge score deed hem werkelijk deugd.
