In Tegenlicht een portret over het gedwongen samenleven van de verdreven, radicale, religieuze kolonisten met de oorspronkelijke seculiere socialistische kibboetsbewoners. Over verleden en toekomstverwachtingen in een verdeeld Israël dat zich opmaakt voor de viering van haar 60-jarig bestaan. Yaniv is een religieuze kolonist, maar woont met vrouw en vier kinderen in een kibboets op enkele kilometers van de grens met Gaza. Drie jaar geleden nog was hij leider van de joodse nederzetting Elay Sinai, net aan de andere kant van de grens met Gaza. Na de ontmanteling van de nederzettingen in 2005 vestigde hij zich met veertig andere kolonistengezinnen noodgedwongen in kibboets Karmya, die zeventig gezinnen telt. De tegenstellingen hadden niet groter kunnen zijn: kibboets Karmya is van oorsprong uitgesproken anti-religieus.
