Op 12 mei 2003 werd rond middernacht de Saoedische hoofdstad Ryad ruw wakker geschud door een groot aantal explosies. Het Al-Qaeda netwerk had weer toegeslagen, dit keer in het land van haar herkomst. Een van de doelen was het wooncomplex van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Vinnell. Bij het ochtendgloren kon de balans worden opgemaakt; 30 doden en meer dan 200 gewonden. Een van de doden is de Amerikaanse ex-sergeant Obadiah Abdullah die bij Vinnell is gaan werken. Dit bedrijf, ooit onderdeel van de Carlyle groep, traint namens de Amerikaanse overheid de Saoedische Nationale Garde. Obadiah Abdullah had zich speciaal aangemeld voor deze post omdat hij als moslim in het Heilige Land dichter bij zijn geloof zou kunnen komen.
