Crisis at the Summit

Jim Hacker's European Conference shows no sign of solving the financial crisis that is threatening his fragile government. But salvation is at hand: Kumranistan is offering Europe a huge loan as an incentive to purchase their newly discovered oil reserves. What Sir Humphrey does not want Jim to know, however, is that there is a condition: Britain must join the Euro, which is against everything Jim believes in.

After exposing Humphrey's scheme to get Britain into the Euro, Jim holds a dinner at Chequers to welcome the Kumranistan Foreign Secretary and pave the way for the massive loan that will save Europe. Meanwhile the BBC are planning a major TV programme on the Government's crisis. When the BBC Director General arrives, Jim uses the threat of BBC reform to get himself a chance to appear live at the end of the programme.

Gentleman's Agreement

To begin with, it looks as if Jim has defeated Humphrey's scheme to get Britain into the Euro. But Bernard tells Humphrey he has found evidence of some dodgy expenses claims by Jim when he was in opposition. However, when Humphrey tries to use this lever, he discovers that Claire has unearthed some of his own equally dodgy expenses claims. Amandaland

Following three series of the Merman-produced, BAFTA award-winning series Motherland, a brand-new spin-off, Amandaland, is coming to the BBC, focused on Amanda.

Post her divorce, Amanda has had to downsize and up sticks to South Harlesden, or as the Estate Agent calls it SoHa (definitely not the area around Wormwood Scrubs prison).

With both Manus and Georgie now at secondary school, Amanda has to try and get her head around raising teenagers, dealing with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety. Not even a woman as certain of her parenting as Amanda can deal with these nightmares alone.

Then there's Amanda's mother Felicity who is constantly around, and completely in denial that she is, in fact, lonely. Theirs is a slightly unhealthy co-dependent relationship based on backhanded compliments and veiled snipes about her new home.

After a brief spell of freedom, Anne is sucked back into being Amanda's minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children's new school. Thank God for Anne.

As The New York Times noted on the occasion of the show's Emmy-winning 25th Anniversary special in 1999, "in defiance of both time and show business convention, 'SNL' is still the most pervasive influence on the art of comedy in contemporary culture." At the close of the century, "Saturday Night Live" placed seventh on Entertainment Weekly's list of the Top 100 Entertainers of the past fifty years.
